Virgin Island Fossil Coral Starfish
Purchase one of these beautiful Starfishes and preserve the ecology of our tropical reefs. Our model made with fossil coral rock is the best way to collect a specimen without endangering the environment. Over harvesting of live Horned Sea Stars has seriously depleted their numbers. For a complete representation our model is sculpted all around: Underneath as well as on the top. It does not sit on a base.

Horned Sea Star Facts
There are about 1,800 living species of starfish, and they occur in all of the Earth's oceans. Sea Stars are carnivores (meat-eaters). They eat clams, oysters, coral, fish, and other animals.
The Horned Sea Star itself is found in the warm, shallow waters of the Tropical Indo-Pacific region, where they have been seriously overharvested. They may grow up to 1 foot across. Usually colored in shades of red or brown, one variety is known as the Chocolate Chip Sea Star. Blue and Green specimens have also been recorded. Horned sea stars prefer sheltered, sandy or slightly muddy bottoms more than hard substrata such as coral reef, and are frequently sighted conspicuously between the leaves of sea grasses on sea grass meadows or on blank stretch of coral sand.
Horned Sea Star: Protoreaster nodosus (Linnaeus, 1758)
CLASSIFICATION: Kingdom - Animali Phylum - Echinodermata Class - Asteroidea
A Caribbean relative of the Horned Sea Star, the Bahama Sea Star, is also a previously-abundant species reduced in number due to continuous harvesting by industry and tourists alike.
